Core staff have unparalleled experience and a global reputation in the operation of online learning communities of inquiry and of practice.

Our aim is to improve formal and informal learning, at every level of education and company training. This has been and continues to be realized through a wide variety of educationally innovative projects such as the creation of the think.com software back in 1998/9, which was designed by Core Education staff (when still at Ultralab) and developed by Oracle over a number of years.

Think.com was specifically aimed at engendering participative learning. Through this we created the Talking Heads online learning communities before handing it over to the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services. Talking Heads (renamed talk2learn by the National College) was both an online social environment that reduced the isolation of school leaders and an online community where learning took place through the interchange of individuals. The emphasis was on informal peer based learning, discussion and dialogue. By the time we handed the communities over to the National College, there were in excess of 25,000 school leaders and other education staff engaged in both informal and formal learning across the various communities creating a vibrant platform for professional development.

Since then, this seminal work has led to other collaborations in the field of online learning communities of practice and inquiry, such as Ultraversity - the innovative online degree and Chestnet - the online community for thoracic physicians and surgeons, to name but two. For two years, we mentored the Facilitation & Knowledge Management Team at the LGiD, who won an e-Government National Award for excellence in professionalism and leadership and a Government Computing Award, whilst we were working with them. Currently, we are partnering the University of Bedfordshire to create a cross sector series of online communities to support global partnerships, co-research and collaborative networks for innovative educators at every level, engaged in improving the quality of education in every context, called the Education Communities.

We believe that it is how the tools are constructed and used that matters. The underlying pedagogy of any e-learning approach is key. New and emerging technologies now offer opportunities for real innovation.

Much of what we are taught at school, university or in employment rapidly becomes obsolete. The demands of life and work now require an individual to take responsibility for their own learning and to be creative in the application of new knowledge. Core's philosophy and expertise is in inquiry based learning at school, university and in the workplace. Learning while remaining in work enables the company or organisation to benefit from improved performance with minimum disruption. Collaborative, social learning develops team skills and is proven to improve the quality of learning. Do it online and this approach becomes more accessible.

We believe this approach should be used for the Professional Development for school staff under pressure from cost and time constraints. Existing schemes persist in using approaches long proven to be ineffective in achieving real change. Core proposes a collaborative approach rewarded with accreditation for real achievement in learning, its application and impact - a model with proven elements to unite teachers, learners, accreditation agencies and society in a ‘connate’ solution.

Core Education NZ have worked with Australian Julia Atkin to create this powerful tool, which allows the whole school to 'hold a mirror' up to itself. Carefully researched & developed over 8 years it is currently being employed in hundreds of New Zealand schools and attracted considerable interest in the UK in the past month. The information it generates, with minimal time input, is displayed in a straightforward and readily understood way.
Dr Julia Atkin explains how she has employed 20 years of experience in this field

The conference is a key event in NZ and the emphasis is clearly on practitioner led professional development, unique in terms of structure, activities and scale. The UK would do well to emulate this approach.

Nick Billows, Core Education NZ, describes the logistics:

“There are a huge number of innovations this year to match the forward march and impact of the new learning landscape. The event is supported through media and web2.0 and innovation at the infrastructural level.

Dave has the unenviable task of building an electronic city in a day, ensuring that its infrastructure immediately performs to 99.9%, guaranteeing that it will remain faultlessly operational over 4 days and then packing it away again over 6 hrs without the loss/displacement of any of the kit. Supported by a heap of background geeks and goffers, this logistics exercise defies description. His reward will come in the happy faces of 1800 laptop owners happily switching on simultaneously and getting the service they want, in 70 trade sponsors being able to faultlessly abuse the network with 60 things they never said they wanted to do,

We are using 8 venues and 49 rooms in each breakout, expecting 1800 delegates, 200 exhibitor personnel and our team. We have a students and a tech support team to support presenters in every room. “

The event is even more remarkable given the population of only 4.4 million. It is the equvalent of the UK running a participatory event for 20000 practitioners in one place at one time.
