Vince Ham

It is with great sadness that we report the passing or our friend and colleague, Dr. Vince Ham, co-director of Core Education, New Zealand.

We have known Vince since the late 1990's in the days of Ultralab North and Ultralab South. He has been both friend and colleague to us, putting us up during visits to New Zealand and staying with some of us, during his visits to the UK. We rate Vince as one of those very special people. One you feel genuinely blessed to have met and known. It wasn’t charisma, it went beyond that.

His searing intelligence was never vaunted but always available. He enlightened lesser mortals without them feeling humbled. His presence relaxed you. That ready smile and gentle demeanour understated his underlying energy and stamina. We often recall him to mind and feel sad that the world has lost someone so remarkably unique.

On a more positive note, a week prior to his passing, our colleagues in New Zealand, with the support of the CORE Education Trust, approved the introduction of a new award, which recognises the huge contribution that Vince has made in the field of educational research in New Zealand. The new Dr Vince Ham Excellence in Postgraduate Scholarship Awards support  research that aligns with one or more of Core Education's charitable objectives and its strategic priorities.
