Dr Stan Owers and Dr Ian Gibson

The Owers Lecture was initiated in 2004 by Prof Stephen Heppell, the founder and director of Ultralab, to celebrate Stan's achievement and to maintain the debate about the vital issues he raised.

Ultralab was the learning technology research centre at Anglia Ruskin University from 1990 - 2006.

On 15th June 2006, the second Owers Lecture took place at Oracle's city office.

Ian Gibson studied at Dumfries Academy in Scotland and continued at Edinburgh University where he gained a doctorate in genetics. He headed a research team investigating various forms of cancer at the University of East Anglia and remains an Honorary Professor. Elected MP for Norwich North in 1997, Ian has been Chair, House of Commons Select Committee for Science and Chair, Parliamentary and Scientific Committee (1999 - 2002) .

He is described by Andrew Roth in The Guardian as:

"an important and active scientific voice in the Commons"
